Runner's
knee, also known as illiotibial band syndrome (ITBS), is a common
activity related injury that occurs in runners and other sportsmen.
ITBS normally occurs as a result of overstressing, overstretching
and/or twisting of the leg and/or the knee. Long distance runners and
cyclists are in particular frequently affected by this painful
problem. However, runner's knee can also affect participants of
other sports, including basketball players, weight lifters, tennis
players, hikers and others. In the runner's knee injury, the
superficial band of illiotibial fascia covering the thigh is
excessively stretched and becomes painful, inflamed or irritated. The
symptoms include strong pain or stinging sensation on the outside and
around the knee or even alongside the entire length of the
illiotibial band. Swelling and inflammation are frequently present.
Many
sufferers do not wish to take pain killing medication due to their
possible side effects. However, at the same time, they also want to
be free of pain and able to continue with their sporting activities.
Laser
phototherapy produces excellent results and can further enhance
conventional therapy systems of any medical practice or therapy
clinic. Treating ITBS with laser phototherapy is highly successful
and pleasing for the therapists and the sufferers. Biostimulating
high energy laser light increases blood flow and improves lymphatic
drainage, thus contributing to reduction of swelling and tissue
regeneration. Pain relief follows and normal movements are restored.
The sufferer feels fitter and can continue with normal physiotherapy
sessions, if required or even returns directly to training.
Many
therapists and athletes benefit regularly from the outstanding
effects of laser phototherapy delivered with MedSolution devices, the
