Herpes Zoster - also known
as ‘shingles' - is a painful blistering rash caused by re-activation of
chickenpox virus. Herpes Zoster rash has a ‘belt-like' appearance that affects
only one side of the body due to its limitation to an area served by a specific
single nerve. The rash is normally preceded by pain and/or tenderness in the
affected area. Once the red painful rash breaks out on the skin, it fast
develops into blisters that burst and crust over a period of a week or longer.
Skin discolorations as well as debilitating post-herpetic neuralgic pain often
follow. Post herpetic neuralgia (PHN) often lingers in the affected areas for
many months or even years after the blisters are healed.
Post herpetic neuralgia is
very difficult to treat. Conventional treatments, such as pain killers, can be
unsatisfactory and/or unsuccessful.
Post herpetic neuralgic pain can be highly debilitating and can
considerably reduce the quality of life for a long time. From the patient's
perspective, it is important to treat the existing pain effectively and
speedily and to prevent its re-occurrence.
Laser photo therapy is very
successful in the treatment of acute symptoms of Herpes Zoster and in the
prevention of post herpetic neuralgia. Laser light reduces the painful symptoms
in the acute phase and helps to prevent post herpetic neuralgia from arising.
Laser photo therapy offers
a modern therapy clinic an outstanding therapeutic modality that can be added
to conventional treatment methods.
